Statutory & Mandatory Training
2024

Any staff member employed by Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is required to complete and maintain competence in a wide range of statutory and mandatory training topics. Staff can complete this training in various ways:

​

  • Classroom based (face to face training)

  • Live virtual sessions

  • E-Learning

  • Training workbook

You can find all the classroom based training and live virtual training dates on this page along with information to complete via a workbook or e-learning. 

​

Employees of Bedfordshire Hospitals are able to attend training on any site. The only exception to this is Manual Handling, this must be completed on your base site.

Core Topics 

The Core Topics training day allows you to update the majority of your mandatory training topics. You can book onto the full day session or just attend the topics you need to renew. This training is face to face on both sites or attend the training session you require on Microsoft Teams

Adult Basic Life Support (BLS) Level 2

Face to Face Adult Basic Life Support Level 2 available on both sites. 

Conflict Resolution - Breakaway Techniques

​This course aims to provide practical, effective Conflict Management and Breakaway Techniques to Frontline NHS staff and professionals, whose work brings them into direct contact with members of the public during the course of their everyday duties who are either responsible or not for their behaviours. It provides them with safe, effective physical Breakaway Techniques based upon the level of threat posed in conflict situations that become physical when non-physical techniques break down.

Dementia Awareness Tier 2

​The aim of this session is to build on the participant’s basic dementia awareness. To increase their knowledge around the causes of dementia and the effects dementia may have on the person’s mind and body. The participant will gain knowledge that they can implement when caring for and supporting someone with dementia with the overall aim of improving the quality of care for people with dementia in the Trust.

Immediate Life Support (ILS)

This is a Resuscitation Council (UK) course aimed at healthcare professionals who may have to act as first responders and treat patients in cardiac arrest until the arrival of a cardiac arrest team. This course blends e-learning with face to face skills training.

Moving and Handling Level 2

This is an update of all aspects of moving and handling patients and the equipment provided by the Trust to support safe manual handling of patients

Neonatal Life Support (NLS) Level 2

These sessions cover the syllabus outlined in the Skills for Health Framework.

  • Know how to recognise and respond to a newborn child

  • Understand the importance of temperature control in the care of the newborn

  • Be able to provide basic airway management

  • Be able to initiate and maintain effective lung ventilations

  • Be able to initiate and maintain effective chest compressions

Oliver McGowan Training on Learning Disabilities and Autism

The training aims to ensure the health and care workforce have the right skills and knowledge to provide safe, compassionate and informed care to autistic people and people with a learning disability. The Oliver McGowan Training comes in two tiers and is designed so all staff working across all CQC registered services receive the right level of mandatory training.

The “Bedfordshire Hospitals Oliver McGowan Pre Learning” learning certification must be completed on
ESR before joining any tier of training. You must complete the e-learning on ESR before attending the session. Please be aware that the introductory videos are of Oliver’s mother describing the events that took place in a health care setting in the lead up to his death. These videos are very emotional, please ensure that you are in a safe space to complete the e learning and you may find it easier and more comforting to complete it in a private space. If you would prefer not to watch the videos you can select to read the transcription.

Oliver McGowan Training on Learning Disabilities and Autism

The training aims to ensure the health and care workforce have the right skills and knowledge to provide safe, compassionate and informed care to autistic people and people with a learning disability. The Oliver McGowan Training comes in two tiers and is designed so all staff working across all CQC registered services receive the right level of mandatory training.

  • Recognise cardiorespiratory arrest and summon help

  • Initiate and maintain effective chest compressions and lung ventilation

  • Management of choking

  • Know how to identify and initiate initial treatment for anaphylaxis

Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS) Level 2

This is a Resuscitation Council (UK) course aimed at registered healthcare professionals who are working with children. The course teaches the necessary skills that are required to recognise deterioration and manage the first few minutes of a respiratory / cardiac arrest whilst awaiting the arrival of the team. This course blends e-learning with face to face skills training.

Safeguarding Adults Level 3 - Full Day

This is a full day, face to face level 3 training session. Level 3 Safeguarding Adult training is for any Registered health care staff who engage in assessing, planning, intervening and evaluating the needs of adults- this includes all medical staff, registered nurses, urgent and unscheduled staff, psychologists, midwives and pharmacists. This is required to be completed every 3 years.

Safeguarding Adults Level 3 - Blended

You can reduce your time in the classroom by attending our blended session. Before you attend this 3 hour face to face session you must complete the Safeguarding Adults level 3 and Preventing Radicalisation E-learning.

Safeguarding Children Level 3 

All clinical staff working with children, young people and/or their parents/carers and who could potentially contribute to assessing, planning and evaluating the needs of a child or young person and parenting capacity where the safeguarding/child protection concerns.

Clinical Device Training - Luton Site

Clinical Device Training is mandatory for all clinical staff. There are specialist training sessions for Assistant Practitioners, HCA's and Registered Nurses, Midwives and Nurse Associates. For further information and booking please contact clinicaldevicetraining@ldh.nhs.uk
