Clinical Skills

There is a variety of clinical skills training available to clinical staff. Before booking a place on the course please read the course description to ensure the training is suitable for you role.

The Trust has committed significant funding into the development of the education & training offer. Some courses have a red contract symbol next to them          , this symbolises that there may be restrictions on this course including which staff groups can attend and that a learning contract must be signed by you and your manager before you can book onto the course. You can find further information regarding the learning contract and a copy of the contract itself in the CPD section of this website.

ALERT

The course aims to teach how to recognise the deteriorating patients using the ABCDE approach and how to care for these patients.

​The ALERT course is targeted at qualified nurses, nursing associates, physios and junior doctors.

BEACH

This training is aimed at CSWs to provide them with the knowledge to use the A,B,C,D approach for assessing patients.

The BEACH course is targeted at Clinical Support Workers / Health Care Assistants.

Luton staff should complete Recognising Escalation of the Deteriorating Patient which is an alternative toe BEACH.

This interactive, practical course has been designed to give an understanding of how, when, and why to write timely and accurate records, including understanding the importance these may have in potential legal proceedings.

This course has been designed to help ensure professionals are able to adopt a defendable practice to their notes and records, while also considering their own accountability and that of their organisation.

Coroners Court Witness Skills with Bond Solon

This practical course is designed to ensure delegates have the support and knowledge to give a truthful, confident and coherent account at a Coroner’s Court inquest.

The course will demystify the process of giving evidence, in which delegates will consider the theory of giving evidence at a Coroner’s court. They will explore the role and responsibilities of everybody involved in an inquest, including their own. Delegates will also take part in a mock Coroner’s Court in which delegates experience being questioned on a realistic case study. This practical role-play allows them to implement the techniques they have learnt during the course in order to remain in control and give effective evidence to the inquest. They will receive feedback on their performance.

Non-Medical Prescribing Update - M&K Update - Virtual

This 1 day update course is designed for all non-medical prescribers to develop and maintain safe and effective prescribing practice. You will explore contemporaneous issues and challenges relating to prescribing practice and evaluate your individual prescribing scope of competence.

Suitable for anyone with a non-medical prescribing qualification.

Recognition Escalation of the Deteriorating Patient

Learn how to perform an A-E assessment, recognise signs of patient deterioration; how and who to escalate to. This course is aimed at Health Care Assistants and Care Support Workers

Bedford staff should complete BEACH which is an alternative to this course.

Catheterisation Training

These courses will provide qualified nurses with the knowledge and understanding to perform the catheterisation procedure on male or female patients. Catheter care training will cover the technique, precaution and complications.

Clinical Nutrition 

The aim of the course is to teach the theoretical elements of care of enteral and parenteral nutrition and detection of malnutrition. The objectives of the day are to cover insertion and care of Nasogastric feeding tubes and care of patients with a PEG; Jejunostomy and Naso Jejunal feeding tube and those caring for patients on Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). This course is aimed at Registered Nurses; Nutrition & Hydration Champions (Link Nurse), 2nd and 3rd Year Student Nurses working on adult wards. It can be used as an initial training course or as a refresher day.

Domestic Abuse Training 

These sessions will cover:

  • The role of the IDVA (Independent Domestic Violence Advisor)

  • Discussing the 'Think Family' approach

  • Signs to look out for

  • How to raise concerns and how to refer.

VAC Training 

This training is targeted at qualified nurses and nursing associates. Practical training to gain confidence in application using Wound Models where delegates will be able to have hands on practice using 3M VAC Therapy

PICO Training 

This training will provide healthcare will provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge,
skills and understanding about PICO dressing application, management

This course is aimed at RN's, Year 3 student nurses, TNA's and NA's. 

This course is split over 2 modules. You should complete both components to be competent.

The training will provide guidance to support staff to complete the Mental
Capacity/Best Interest tool as downloaded from the Intranet.

MCA, Best Interest Decisions & Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards - Virtual

The MCA, Best Interest Decisions & Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards session will cover:

• The MCA 2005

 • The key principles of the MCA 2005

• How the code affects practice relating to the MCA

• The best interests principles

• How & when the MCA protects health carers from liability

• How the deprivation of the liberties (DoL) affects care practice

• Responsibilities in relation to MCA/BI & DOLS​

Diabetes Training -Dates at the Luton Site
 Bedford Hospital staff can book onto this course

This is a great opportunity for all ward staff: qualified nursing staff, assistant practitioners, healthcare assistants and allied healthcare professionals to learn more and update themselves about diabetes management from admission to discharge. This study day is full of information on a day to day care of patients with diabetes in the ward to deliver evidence based care for patient safety and increase patient satisfaction and have a positive patient experience

Food, Nutrition & Hydration 
 

The study day provides information to support those delivering this essential element of care. The day will demonstrate the importance of food and hydration throughout the patients’ stay in hospital; MUST screening and action planning for those at risk of malnutrition, safe feeding techniques, the role of the Multidisciplinary Team in good quality food and nutritional care and how to care for patients with feeding tubes.

This course is aimed at Target Audience Health Care Assistants; Support Workers and 1st & 2nd Year Student Nurses working on adult wards and directly involved in providing food, hydration and assistance at mealtimes. It can be used as an initial course or refresher day.

Understanding Blood Results 

This course is aimed at registered Nurses, Midwives, AHPs and Nursing Associates.

Stoma Care - Drop in
